| Sunday (Father's Day) - Flew Sacramento to Phoenix
to Baltimore to Ronkonkoma, NY (Long Island). Got in @ 8:30 pm and
stayed at the Econo Lodge (all that it's name implies!). Played
"micro-scrabble"...board is 3" square.
Monday - took Long Island Rail Road to Penn Station in midtown
NYC, walked about a mile to the Edison Hotel (nice, old hotel, 1/2 block
from Times Square). Got lunch at a deli and ate on top of the double
decker tour bus (best deal we found in NYC, hop on and off anytime,
8am-9pm). Went to Empire State Building, took the Staten Island Ferry
(free), where 6 year old Tanisha talked our ears off - VERY smart little
girl - asked a zillion questions. Dinner in Little Italy at
Pomodoro, on the sidewalk, yummy! Subway back to catch night tour, on top
deck, had a thunderstorm for awhile (just a cloud burst, lightning),
across the Brooklyn Bridge, but we stayed up top through it all. Great
view of the city at night. Back to Times Square and Hotel.
Tuesday - Went to Statue of Liberty - awesome sight - so many
people from all over the world. Rode on top deck of the ferry so we could
see the skyline. A beautiful, warm day, got lunch to go and ate in
Central Park, then to Metropolitan Museum of Art. Saw Monet's, Tiffany
windows, Egyptian mummy stuff and antique musical instruments. Went
through Grand Central Station...huge and beautifully redone...truly
Grand! Then the Lion King that evening...it was so amazing!
Sets, costumes, music and we had great seats! Walked back through Times
Square - wow - at 11 pm. It's just getting started...I'm exhausted!
Wednesday - Caught double-decker to Central Park, rented bikes
and rode the Hudson River trail to the Cloisters at the top of Manhattan -
it's a medieval art gallery housed in a replica of a monastery - a
surprise destination! Ate lunch along the river and played a little
tune. Rode back through town (even on Broadway! Exciting in
places!) After turning in bikes, walked across Central Park to the
Guggenheim Museum. Saw Monet's, Picassos, Van Goghs, Naum Gabo
(complex, geometric shapes made out of fishing line and Plexiglas),
others...amazing building. Then to our room for a quick turn around
before going to see Stomp. Took subway to the East Village, had
dinner at Dojo. "Interesting" people down there!
Stomp was amazing, high energy precision percussion using junk - loved
it! Subway back to Times Square, got ice cream at a Hagan Daas,
masses of people on a Wednesday night!
Thursday - Starbucks, subway to Penn Station, LIRR to
Ronkonkoma, shuttle to get rental car and checked in at Holiday Inn next
to airport. Drove to Sayville, took ferry across Great South Bay to
Fire Island, walked on the beach, waded in the Atlantic, jogged, laid in
sun couple of hours (on a "gay" beach), caught ferry back, drove
out to Jones Beach and back along Highway 27a (rural, two-lane, close to
water, going through several small towns), eating dinner in East Islip.
Friday - Flew back to Sacramento via Baltimore and
Phoenix. Huge forest fires in Arizona. Thank you, Lord for a
WONDERFUL trip!
